What Is a Falsa Blanket? Your Guide to the Classic Mexican Yoga Blanket

30th Sep 2026

If you've spent any time in a yoga studio, you've probably practiced on one without knowing its name: the striped, fringed Mexican blanket folded at the back of the room. That's a falsa blanket, and it's one of the most versatile textiles Mexico ever made.

So What Exactly Is a Falsa Blanket?

A falsa (sometimes called a "false serape") is a soft, medium-weight woven blanket, usually around 72 x 49 inches, with muted multicolored stripes and short fringe on the ends. The name comes from the tradition of weaving these blankets on the same looms as finer serapes — they were originally the everyday "false" or casual versions of the fancier blankets.

Today the falsa is beloved for exactly what made it "everyday" in the first place: it's soft, durable, machine-friendly, and affordable compared to nearly any other natural-fiber blanket of the same quality.

Falsa vs. Serape: What's the Difference?

People often use the words interchangeably, but there are a few differences worth knowing:

  • Falsa blankets tend to have softer, blended stripes, a slightly looser weave, and a pliable drape. That's what makes them perfect for folding, rolling, and supporting the body.
  • Serapes (like our XL handwoven serape blankets) usually feature bolder, high-contrast stripes, a tighter weave, and more decorative fringe. They're the striking throw you put on the couch.

Both are handwoven in Mexico and both are beautiful. The falsa just likes to be used.

Why Yogis Love Falsa Blankets

Falsa blankets are a staple of Iyengar and restorative yoga, and for good reason:

  • Cushioning — folded under sitting poses, they protect bones and joints from hard floors.
  • Insulation — in restorative poses, they keep body heat off cold flooring.
  • Support — rolled or folded, they prop knees, spines, and shoulders in exactly the right place.
  • Weight and warmth — draped over the body in savasana, they add a gentle, calming pressure.

Beyond the Yoga Studio

A falsa earns its keep outside class too: picnic blanket, beach blanket, couch throw, car blanket, emergency gift when you forgot someone's birthday. They wash easily, pack down flat, and survive years of abuse.

How to Choose a Good One

Look for even, tight weaving, straight fringe, and rich (but not garish) color. Our classic falsa blankets come in more than a dozen colors, from green to navy, red, mint, and pink — and we also carry premium extra-large falsas and a money-saving 3-pack.
