How to Wash a Mexican Blanket (Without Ruining It)

30th Sep 2026

A good Mexican blanket can last for decades — but only if you wash it right. Whether you own a colorful serape throw, a soft falsa yoga blanket, or a heavy everyday cobija, the care routine matters. Wash it wrong and the colors fade, the fringe tangles, and the weave loses its shape.

Here's how we recommend caring for your blankets (the same advice we give customers at our San Angelo, Texas storefront, where we've been selling Mexican goods since 1999).

First, Know Your Blanket

Most traditional Mexican blankets sold today, including ours, are woven from acrylic fibers or a cotton-acrylic blend. That's what makes them soft, warm, affordable, and colorfast. The care instructions below work for acrylic-weave serapes and falsa blankets.

If your blanket is 100% wool (rare, and usually expensive), hand wash cold and lay flat to dry — never machine dry wool.

Washing Your Blanket: Step by Step

  1. Shake it out first. Remove dust, sand, crumbs, or pet hair.
  2. Wash cold, gently. Machine wash on cold with a gentle cycle. Hot water is the #1 cause of fading and shrinking in Mexican blankets.
  3. Use a mild detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener — bleach dulls the stripes, and softener coats the fibers so the blanket loses its crispness.
  4. Wash alone the first time. New blankets can release a bit of color. After the first wash, you can wash it with similar colors.
  5. Mind the fringe. Use a mesh laundry bag if your washer tends to tangle fringe, or hand wash in a tub for extra protection.

Drying

  • Best option: Air dry. Hang the blanket over a railing or lay it flat on a clean surface, flipping once.
  • Faster option: Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting only, and take it out while it's still slightly damp to finish air drying.
  • Never use high heat. Acrylic fibers can melt, stiffen, or lose their weave under high temperatures.

Storage Tips

Fold your blanket and store it in a dry, ventilated space. Avoid sealing it in plastic for long periods — the fibers need to breathe. A cedar block in the closet keeps moths away without the smell of mothballs.
