Traditionally, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 to commemorate the death of Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and their national apostle. Patrick was born in Roman Britain during the fifth century and at the age of 16 was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. After about 6 years he successfully managed to escape, but claimed he would return one day since he fell in love with the rich culture and the spirit that Ireland embodied. Patrick eventually did travel back to Ireland where he brought with him the teachings of Christianity.
Legend has it that when he was in Ireland, he explained the holy trinity to pagans by using a 3 leaf Irish clover, also known as a shamrock, which is why it has become such an important and widely recognized symbol for St. Patrick’s Day. Another legend speaks to how St. Patrick drove out all the snakes in Ireland, which were a popular symbol among Irish pagans.
Nowadays, St. Patty’s is celebrated all over the world with feasts and religious services everywhere from the United States and Canada to Russia and Japan!
May this St. Patrick’s day bring you lots of luck, many blessings, and countless joys.
